New Casualty - MONTE SARMIENTO - Fire
Incident Date: 23rd June 2023
Vessel: MONTE SARMIENTO
IMO No. 9283227
Type: Fully Cellular Containership
Incident: Fire
We have learned of an incident involving the vessel MONTE SARMIENTO, a Brazilian Flag, 69132 gt, 2005 built, fully cellular containership, which caught fire in the engine room on the 23rd of June while en route from Santos to Itapoa, Brazil, about 50 nautical miles east of Paranagua. The crew activated the ship’s own carbon dioxide firefighting system, but the fire spread to containers in the aft stacks. The vessel went adrift with the tug Svitzer Carolina and a Navy ship nearby. The vessel was moored on Sao Francisco Anchorage.
The fully cellular container vessel with a capacity of 4,000teu is operated by Empresa De Navegacao Alianca and had previously called at Salvador, Pecem and Suape before sailing to Santos. As a result of this incident it is highly likely that there will be delays to cargo delivery and cargo owners might be required to provide securities before delivery of cargo.
