W.E. Cox have learnt of an incident involving the HMM TACOMA, a South Korean flag, 7,2597GT fully cellular containership which suffered a fire in hold no. 7 while sailing through the Mozambique Channel 29th December 2024

It is understood that the vessel, which has a capacity of 6,350teu required external professional support to assist the crew in extinguishing the fire. The extent of damage is not yet known and the cause of the fire as well as an assessment of damages is scheduled to take place at a port of refuge, thought to be in South Africa.

The HMM TACOMA is owned and managed by Hyundai Merchant Marine and operates on their Far East-India-Mediterranean (FIM) route. She was destined for Europe having previously called at Korea, China, Singapore and Indian ports.

As a result of this casualty, cargo deliveries will be delayed, with some cargoes known to have been damaged. The situation may also give rise to General Average that will require Cargo interests to provide General Average Security prior to cargo being released at destination.
