W.E. Cox have been appointed by cargo interests in relation to an incident involving the vessel CMA CGM BELEM, a Malta Flag containership, which reported collapse of stow with loss of at least 99 containers off the coast of South Africa 18th August 2024.

The 336 metre container vessel was only delivered in 2024 and has a capacity of 13,000teu. She is owned and operated by CMA CGM on their Asia South America East Coast 2 (SEAS2) routing calling at Chinese Ports, Singapore and Brazilian Ports.

It is understood that the Master has requested refuge and that she is currently anchored at Port Elizabeth Anchorage awaiting further assistance.

In addition to the lost containers, it is understood that a significant number of containers may have been damaged and will need to be removed from the Vessel, which will lead to further cargo losses and delays. W.E. Cox have retained expert local assistance in South Africa to assist in gaining entry to the vessel and cargo at the earliest opportunity.
