Casualty Report - MAERSK FRANKFURT - Fire

Incident Date:   19th July 2024
Vessel:                MAERSK FRANKFURT
IMO No.             9969065
Type:                  Fully Cellular Containership
Incident:            Fire

We have learned of an incident involving the vessel MAERSK FRANKFURT, a Panama Flag containership, which reported a fire 19th July 2024.

The 225 metre container vessel was only delivered in 2024 and has a capacity of 5,500teu. She was sailing from India to Sri Lanka when a fire was reported within the container cargo approximately 50NM off Karwar, India. The Indian Navy are attempting to restrict the fire however it is understood that the fire has impacted a significant portion of the Vessel which is time chartered by Maersk and scheduled to call at Colombo, Port Klang, Singapore and Chinese Ports before calling at Malaysia. As a result of this incident it is highly likely that there will be significant cargo damages as well as delays to cargo delivery.

Given the extent of the fire it is likely that external assistance will be required and that professional Salvors may be appointed. This itself may lead to cargo owners being required to provide Salvage and/or General Average Guarantees before cargo will be delivered.
