New Casualty - ESCAPE - Fire & Salvage
Incident Date: 22nd February 2023
Vessel: ESCAPE
IMO No. 9491501
Type: Fully Cellular Containership
Incident: Fire & Salvage
We have learned of an incident involving the vessel ESCAPE, a Dutch flag, 17,368gt, 2011 built, fully cellular containership, which suffered a significant fire in the Baltic Sea 22nd February 2023.
The fully cellular container vessel with a capacity of 1,436teu is a feeder vessel operated by Confeeder and was en-route to Riga, Latvia having previously called at Lithuania, Poland and Germany when fire erupted in the engine room. The crew were unable to prevent the fire spreading to the superstructure and were forced to abandon ship, being safely rescued by a good Samaritan vessel.
We understand that professional Salvors are continuing to fight the fire and once safe to do so will attempt to tow the ESCAPE to Riga, Latvia.
It is likely that significant cargo damage will have occurred and that sound cargoes may be required to provide Salvage and/or General Average Security prior to receiving their cargo.
