Incident: Fire
We have learned of an incident involving a fire in cargo hold no. 4 of the ZIM CHARLESTON, a Hong Kong flag, 2011 built, 91,761gt fully cellular containership, off Colombo, Sri Lanka, where she was completing a voyage from Singapore.
It is estimated that some 300 containers are likely to be damaged by the fire itself &/or extinguishing water resulting from firefighting operations or affected by heat and smoke.
On 8th August, the vessel departed Colombo waters and sailed in a westerly direction before turning back to take berth at Colombo to assess options for discharging containers from the hold. Meanwhile, containers stowed on deck were offloaded from affected bays.
