We have learned of an incident involving the vessels FLINTERSTAR, a 2002 built, 6,577gt general cargo vessel with container capacity, and AL ORAIQ, a 2008 built, 136,685gt liquid natural gas carrier, which collided off of the port of Zeebrugge at approximately 0400hrs this morning.
The FLINTERSTAR has suffered significant damage resulting in water ingress. It is understood that the FLINTERSTAR is currently partially submerged and resting on a sandbank with tugs in attendance.
The AL ORAIQ is not reported to have suffered significant damages however vessel interests have mobilised a response team in case of damage/pollution.
The FLINTERSTAR was en-route from Antwerp to Bilbao having previously called at The Netherlands and the UK. The AL ORAIQ was en-route from Port Said to Zeebrugge when the collision occurred.
It is anticipated that this incident will involve a significant salvage operation and potentially Salvage/GA security may need to be provided by cargo interests.
W.E. Cox Claims Group will continue to monitor this situation closely.
