NEW CASUALTY – SSL KOLKATA

Incident Date: 14th June 2018

Vessel: SSL KOLKATA

IMO No. 9346574

Type: Fully Cellular Containership

Incident: Fire

There has been a big fire on the container feeder vessel, SSL KOLKATA, earlier today. From the information received so far, we have the following understanding.

Responding to a distress call from the vessel, the Indian coastguard attended the vessel and has evacuated 22 crew members. Due to the strong winds, the fire has spread very quickly and has already engulfed 70% of the vessel.

Professional salvors have been contracted under the Lloyd’s Standard Form of Salvage Agreement (LOF) to salve the vessel and cargo.

Under LOF, salvage securities need to be provided by the salved cargo interests before it is released by the salvors. We can assist you in the handling of this matter, which normally involves provision of the salvage and GA securities, arranging surveys, adjusting potential losses, handling of the salvage claim and general average (GA) claim, pursuing recovery from the carriers, etc.

The vessel was a feeder vessel operating between Kolkata and Chennai but could have had onboard containers from anywhere in the world.

If you have insured cargo onboard this vessel, we suggest that you get in touch with us as soon as possible so that we can start taking steps to protect your interests.
