NEW CASUALTY – NYK DELPHINUS

We have learned of an incident involving the vessel NYK DELPHINUS, a Liberia flag, 55,487gt, 2007 built, fully cellular containership, which reportedly experienced a fire en route from Vancouver to Port of Oakland, approximately eighty miles off the Monterey Bay coast.

The crew contacted Coast Guard Sector San Francisco to report a fire following an explosion in the engine room. Coast Guard watchstanders observed smoke coming from the vessel’s smokestack.

A Unified Command consisting of the U.S. Coast Guard, the State of California, and commercial Salvage company Resolve Marine responded, and tugboats DELTA DEANNA, SARAH AVRICK, DELTA LINDSAY and JAMIE ANN are transiting NYK DELPHINUS under tow to an offshore location west of Point Reyes. Upon arrival, additional fire and Salvage teams are planning to embark the vessel to conduct structural integrity inspections and examine damage to the engine room. Once the inspection is completed, NYK DELPHINUS is scheduled to transfer to Oakland Terminal Berth 22.

We are yet to hear of any declaration of General Average or the nature of contract under which professional Salvors were engaged.
