NEW CASUALTY – KIRAN ASYA

We have learned of an incident involving the vessel KIRAN ASYA, a Turkey flag, 2005 built, 39,555gt bulk carrier on 10th September 2019, laden with a cargo of wheat in bulk, on a voyage from Russia to Turkey, when fire broke out during discharge operations at Atakas Port, Iskenderun. The crew and stevedore emergency duty team initiated fire-fighting operations, subsequently being joined by Iskenderun bay duty fire-fighting tugs from sea side together with a fire brigade team from shore side to assist in bringing the fire under control.

The fire was duly extinguished and cooling operations carried out in the Port, where the vessel remains. No one was injured in the incident, although slight pollution occurred at the pier and sea due to the fire-fighting operation. The cause of fire is unknown at this stage, but an incident investigation file has been opened by the Iskenderun Harbour Master. State surveyors have been appointed to investigate the cause of the incident and extent of damage, and the vessel’s departure permission has been revoked by the Harbour Master until completion of investigation formalities.
